If you drive an electric car or are thinking about getting one, of course, you want to know what it costs to charge and drive it. Here you will get an approximate estimate of what it can cost and how you should think in order to charge as cheaply as possible.

Charge electric car. What will be your cost?

It depends on several factors, but we make a calculation example and you will get a hint.

We assume that your electric car has a 75 kWh battery, an average consumption of 18 kWh/100km and a range of 420 km.

How much does it cost to charge an electric car at home?

It is probably the cheapest way to charge your electric car at home, since you usually pay your regular electricity price. Average price per kWh for a villa is currently priced at roughly $1.90 including tax and net fees. Charging an electric car with a 75 kWh battery to the full costs then about 140 SEK. With a range of 42 miles, the cost per mile is approximately SEK 3.40 per mile.

How much does it cost to charge an electric car in public parking?

When you charge your electric car in a brf, community or at work, you buy the electricity from them. The price is then determined by various factors.

  • Should the person charging pay for the transmission of the electricity or just the electricity price?
  • Should the person who charges be involved in paying off any investment in charging poles?
  • How is the cost distributed? Has parking itself become more expensive because there are chargers?

Depending on the costs to be covered, the price today typically varies between 2.50 and 4.50 SEK per kWh. This means that you pay around 190 to 340 SEK to fully charge a car with a 75 kWh battery. With a range of 42 miles, the cost per mile will be between approximately SEK 4.50 and SEK 8.10 per mile.

What does it cost to charge along the way?

On motorways and on major thoroughfares, charge your electric car at fast charger which provides direct current (DC) directly to the battery, often with a power of between 50 and 350 kW depending on the capacity of the car model. Fast charging to 80% usually takes around 30 minutes. These chargers are included in public networks such as Ionity, More, InCharge and Recharge. Prices vary, and you can get better deals with a subscription or membership — but the most common is that you pay between 6.50 — 8.50 SEK/kWh when you charge as a guest.

You will then pay between 490 and 640 SEK to fully charge a 75 kWh battery. With a range of 42 miles, it gives a mile cost of between £11.70 and £15.20 per mile. It is thus clearly cheaper to charge at home or in the workplace if available.

If you often drive long distances and need to refuel along the way, it may pay to review the subscriptions and memberships on offer.

How you can influence your charging cost

As with petrol and diesel cars, your mileage cost and range are affected by your driving style. By running smoother and calmer, less energy is used.

Charge when electricity is cheap

As an electric car owner, you have more opportunities to control your charging costs compared to those who refuel with fossil fuels. The electricity price varies throughout the day, which makes it smart to charge when the electricity price is at its lowest, i.e. during the night. When your charging should start is something you can often control in an app or with a timer — so charging doesn't have to start.

Avoid power peaks

Charging slowly on lower power is also smart. On the one hand, it is more gentle on the battery, it prevents the electric car charging from creating power peaks in your electricity consumption. By 1 January 2027, all electricity network companies shall charge a Fees based on power. It makes it smart to spread out your electricity usage and to charge your car at times when you're not using household electricity for, for example, cooking, cleaning and laundry.

Winter and cold weather don't just mean higher electricity prices. The capacity of the battery and the car's consumption per mile are also affected. In severe cold, you can consumption increase by 40%.
