On January 1, 2025 a new EU law has entered into force requiring parking spaces in heated buildings other than residential buildings with more than 20 parking spaces in the building or on the site to have at least one charging point for electric vehicles.

The aim of the Act is to build up a network of charging stations and create a common level of charging infrastructure in EU member states. This will make it easier to charge in large parking lots. In the long run, this means reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the EU.

In view of the fact that the requirements of the law are further tightened January 1, 2027 with effect tariffs, it is wise to think long term. In this case, there should be one charging point for every 10 parking spaces and advanced charging infrastructure for at least 50% of the spaces.

Despite the fact that electric car sales have slowed somewhat at the moment, the development is clear, we will drive electric cars more and more and then the charging infrastructure will have to keep up.

EU requirements for charging poles from 2025 with power-smart electric car charging

Installing electric car charging is a good deal for a property, business, and other public parking lots. And it does not have to be complicated or expensive, especially if you choose a supplier who can take responsibility for the whole, from design and installation to operation and support.

ChargeNode has been developing and establishing charging infrastructure since 2018 and is today Sweden's largest supplier of large-scale electric vehicle charging with nearly 60,000 charging points around the country.

With a smooth charging and payment service As a facility owner, you have full control over all charging sessions, with automated payment flows for the management of self-invoicing and payment of electricity costs. End users charge their cars via a user-friendly app, RFID tag or payment terminal.

Think long-term when a new law on charging poles is introduced

Because ChargeNode develops proprietary hardware in the form of a beam solution and charging post with lighting and providing external charging boxes, new charging systems can be installed and operated entirely according to the requirements of the plant owner. If there are already existing sockets, it is possible to migrate them to ChargeNode's charging and payment service.

ChargeNode's electric car charging is additionally Departure based which means the consumption is automatically distributed over time according to when the respective car needs to go. This will solve the problem of charging peaks that easily arise if all cars are charged at the same time, especially in the morning and evening when electricity is at its most expensive. By leveling the load on the power grid, there is also no need to increase the power in the property. Even more to earn in other words. In some cases, it is also possible for a commercial operator to receive a grant through the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

With a new law on charging poles, it is important to think long term. Other benefits include the fact that electric car charging attracts more customers and guests, creates a more attractive workplace and, not least, is an important contribution in the transition to a fossil-free society.

Consider this with the EU law on charging poles

  • Plan long term and prepare for more charging outlets.
  • Choose departure-based electric car charging and avoid power peaks.
  • Make it easy and choose a provider that takes care of the big picture.
  • Installation of the charging points themselves does not require a building permit.
  • The EU requirement applies to the property, but the charging points do not have to be accessible to the public or to everyone in the property.
  • Those requirements do not apply to residential buildings.
  • The plant owner decides what the electric car charge will cost.
  • There are no charging power, metering or charging requirements, but recommended.
