Is fast charging sustainable?

Fast charging can be sustainable if it is done with green electricity and smart control. With the right technology, the load on the power grid is reduced and the climate impact will be low.

Energy consumption and sources

Both fast charging (DC) and slow charging (AC) have basically the same climate impact, if the electricity comes from the same source.

The climate impact of electric cars is over 70% lower than fossil-fueled cars, especially in Sweden where the electric mix is almost completely fossil-free.

The environmental impact of charging depends on the origin of the electricity — the greater the proportion of green electricity (hydro, wind and solar), the less indirect carbon dioxide emissions per charge.

Technical solutions such as dynamic power control and load balancing reduces the load on the electrical system and contributes to smarter energy use when charging.

How ChargeNode works with sustainable charging

ChargeNode optimizes charging via digital platform, so that the power consumption is distributed evenly over time and the power grid is less loaded at high effects.

The company prioritizes material selection and manufacturing with a low climate footprint, such as low carbon dioxide and recycled aluminum for the charging infrastructure.

The platform also manages integration with green electricity and self-sufficient solutions, such as local solar energy production and the ability to report all charges in the digital portal.

Charging as part of a sustainable mobility system

Effect-smart electric car charging is a key to building a mobility system with a low climate impact. Each charging point provides both a societal climate benefit and a climate profile for property and businesses.

In addition, the charging infrastructure contributes to higher property value and ensures the mobility needs of the future — which is demanded by tenants and customer groups today.

Summary:

Fast charging can be very sustainable if the right electricity and technology is used; ChargeNode actively works with power management, green electricity and climate-smart material choices to maximize the climate benefit of each charging solution. Slow charging may be a little gentler for the battery, but from an environmental point of view, the difference between fast and slow charging is small.
