Are you faced with investing in charging points and wondering if it's AC or DC you need? Here are the differences -- and how to choose the right one for your property's use and finances.

Planning electric car charging is about balancing cost, power and usage patterns. Here's a handy guide to choosing the right combination of AC and DC charging for your property.

AC charging — “normal charge” for home use

AC (AC) charging is the standard in the electrical grid and is mainly used for charging over extended periods of time, such as at night in residential properties and workplaces.

Effect: Up to 22 kW per point (depending on car and network).

Cost: Relatively low installation and operating cost.

Usage: Accommodation, employees and commuting — cars are often parked for several hours.

Advantage: Smart load balancing and price control reduces subscription and power charges.

DC charging — fast charging for public places

DC (DC) charging supplies power directly to the car's battery and does not require in-car conversion. This allows for high power and fast charging.

Effect: 50—350 kW — fast charge in 20—60 minutes.

Cost: Higher investment and maintenance cost, and potentially higher power charges.

Users who need DC today:

  • Travelers on highways and rest areas
  • Taxi and corporate fleets with intensive driving
  • Trading places where customers want fast replenishment
  • Workplaces with many users during the day
  • Time-critical vehicles such as ambulance and emergency

How to choose the right one:

Do you need charging for residents or employees? Choose AC charging: cost-effective and fully sufficient for night charging.

Do you have a lot of visitors or visitors? Complete with DC for short charging stops.

AC — Greater possibility of smart control

ChargeNodes technology can handle both DC and AC charging. However, the big gains are mainly found in smart AC charging control to maximize usage and economy for properties where cars are parked for longer periods of time.
