How charging affects the health of the battery

Your charging habits are the most direct way to affect the long-term health of your battery. Here's what you need to know to nurture your battery in the best way.

Understand the differences between charging types

AC charging (home charging): This is the most gentle form of charging. The car converts alternating current into direct current via its built-in charger, which occurs at low power and generates minimal thermal stress. Even maximum home charging is so gentle that the adjustment of amperes does not play a big role in battery health.

DC Fast Charging: In the case of public fast chargers (100 kW or more), direct current is supplied directly to the battery. The high power generates more heat and chemical stress, making frequent fast charging more stressful than AC charging.

The Golden Rules of Battery Health

Keep the charge level between 40— 80%: This is the optimal range for daily use. Within this span, cells are least exposed to chemical stress.

Avoid 100% at rest: Charge to 100% only just before a long trip, and unplug quickly afterwards. Leaving the battery fully charged for hours or days accelerates permanent loss of capacity.

Prevent deep discharge: Never allow the battery to reach 0%, as this will greatly stress the cells and may void the warranty.

Managing temperatures: Use the car's preconditioning when connected to charging in extreme weather. This heats or cools the battery before charging and running, protecting against damage and maximizing range.

ChargeNode's battery-friendly solutions

ChargeNode handles over 60,000 charge points and uses smart load balancing to enable gentle AC charging on a large scale. By ensuring reliable home charging in real estate and housing associations reduces the need for stressful fast charging for everyday driving. It makes it easy for you as a driver to stay within the optimal 40-80% range daily — which is the best investment for the long-term health of your battery.
