As the automotive industry moves to electrified vehicles, it is important that the technology is standardised, so that everyone can charge easily and safely, regardless of the brand of the electric car or the charging box or who operates the charging points. Therefore, it goes without saying that ChargeNode's hardware and charging service support OCPP.

What is and what does OCPP mean?

OCPP stands for Open Charge Point Protocol which is a standardized application protocol that allows charging stations and charging station networks from different providers to communicate with each other in an efficient manner. Since it is an open protocol, anyone can implement it in their products and services. OCPP was developed by Open Charge Alliance (OCA) with the aim of improving and developing the use of standards and open protocols to the charging infrastructure. All in order to make it easy to run on electricity. When everyone speaks the same language, it becomes much easier to load. The less language distortion, the faster the transition from fossil vehicles to electric vehicles will be.

All charging points that support OCPP speak the same language, regardless of make, whether it is a charging box, charging post or ChargeNode beam. You are not tied to a manufacturer of the hardware or software provider.

Since January 2024, ChargeNode's charging system communicates via OCPP.

“It is very important for us to be transparent and to offer a smooth and future-proof system,” explains Christofer Rosengren at ChargeNode.

“We offer a smooth and secure end-to-end solution where software and hardware work seamlessly with each other, but this does not exclude that the system can be transparent and open for customers to choose other operators, or vice versa.”

Do you want to migrate your existing facility to ChargeNode's charging service? No problem, we support the most common charging box manufacturers on the market that talk OCPP.

A safe and comprehensive solution

  • Future-proof hardware as well as charging service.
  • No reliance on third-party cloud services.
  • Not locked to an operator.
  • ChargeNode supports OCPP through the hardware.
  • The Open Charge Alliance updates the code to OCPP on an ongoing basis. (Version 1.6J. will soon be updated to 2.1 in 2025.)
