If you drive an electric car or are thinking about getting one, you’ll want to know what it costs to charge and drive it. Here’s a rough estimate of what it might cost and how you should go about charging as cheaply as possible.
It depends on several factors, but let’s do some math to give you an idea.
We assume that your electric car has a 70 kWh battery, an average consumption of 20 kWh/100km and a range of 350 km.
Charging your electric car at home is probably the cheapest option as you only pay your normal electricity price. The average price of electricity for a villa usually ends up at about SEK 1.50 with everything included. Then it costs around 105 SEK to charge an electric car with a 70 kWh battery completely full. You get 35 miles for 105 SEK and get a mileage cost of 3 SEK.
When you charge your electric car in a community or at work, you buy the electricity from them. The price is then determined by various factors.
Depending on the costs to be covered, the price of electricity can vary between €1 and €3.50. This means that you pay between 70 and 245 SEK to fully charge. This means you can drive 35 miles at a cost of SEK 2-7/mile.
We start from a fast charger that is found along many roads. They provide direct current (DC) to the battery and can charge the electric car directly. The power of such a fast charger is between 50kW and 350kW, depending on how much your car can receive. This means you can charge almost fully (80%) in 30 minutes. These fast chargers are part of public charging networks such as Ionity, Mer, InCharge and Recharge. Prices vary, of course, and with different subscriptions and services you can get a lower price with some providers.
In this example, we only look at the price you pay as a “guest” on a charger.

You’ll pay between €175 and €609 for a full charge. This means a mileage cost of between 5 and 17.40 SEK/mile. The most economical option is to charge as much as possible at home.
