The most important variables in terms of EV charging time are battery size, the built-in charging capacity of the car and the type of charging station. The charging speed via a fast charger also differs during different parts of the charging cycle; it is faster to charge from 0% – 80% than from 80% – 100%. It is recommended that you charge your car to a maximum of 80% to avoid unnecessary battery drain. Charging time can also be longer during winter because the lithium ions in the battery move more slowly at lower temperatures, and because much of the energy is used to heat the battery first.

We usually talk about two different types of charging stations. AC chargers (for normal charging) and DC chargers (fast chargers). AC chargers (ChargeNode systems or boxes) are usually found at housing associations, some public parking lots and as home chargers. Fast chargers are the type found at gas stations, for example. AC charging is mostly done via charging stations with a power of 3.6 kW, 11 kW or 22 kW. They can be connected to 1- or 3-phase, depending on the power required. For higher power charging stations, they are connected to 3-phase because this is required to obtain as much power and to provide as even a load balance as possible.
