Charge and drive
electric cars in cold weather

Tips and tricks on what to consider

You wake up in the morning and it’s cold. Really cold. It feels like the electric car is going half of its promised range. Why is that?

Charging anxiety

The electric car battery needs more than a hat and mittens when temperatures drop well below zero. Range is reduced and charging takes longer. This is because the cold slows down the chemical processes needed to charge the battery. Follow our tips to get a better handle on EV charging in cold weather

Prepare your electric car for a chilly reception

It’s not the charging station that determines how fast you can charge and how far you can go in winter, but the capacity of the battery. Range is affected by the many kilowatt hours needed to heat the battery and the car’s interior. You won’t get as far on one charge. But electric cars start more easily than many fossil fuel cars in cold weather. With a little planning and an understanding of what affects charging, you can manage well even when the thermometer shows ten and twenty, even thirty degrees below zero.

Preheat car and battery

Many electric cars have batteries that are equipped with preheating systems. Unfortunately, most hybrids lack this smart solution. By preheating your electric car during the winter months, you can optimize battery performance and extend its range. That’s why it’s also a good idea to park your car in a heated garage. This will help reduce the amount of energy needed to heat the cabin and battery.

Of course, you’ll keep an extra eye on your battery level and the location of charging stations if you’re driving longer distances. And you have an alternative plan in case something unexpected happens. That habit is quickly ingrained. Just like having realistic expectations of your electric car’s performance on the coldest days of the year. So prepare properly and take it easy on the road to avoid range anxiety.

10 tips for charging and driving in cold weather

  • Charge when you get home. Not when you’re leaving. A car battery charges much better when it’s warm so don’t wait until the morning.
  • Many of the kilowatt hours are used to heat the cabin and battery, which affects the range.
  • Drive for a while before charging so that the battery warms up. A warm battery charges better than a cold one.
  • In most electric cars, you can also indicate that you want to charge in your GPS. The car will then warm up the battery a little extra to charge at full power.
  • If possible, park in a heated garage. Heating a cold car, both the cabin and the battery, takes a lot of energy.
  • Plan your journeys, especially if you are driving a long way, in case a station is out of service or busy.
  • Deduct at least a quarter of the range you have in summer when driving in the cold with a hot car.
  • As the temperature drops, the air becomes thicker and drag increases, which particularly affects larger cars. Unfortunately, a roof box also affects the range.
  • Many people travel to ski resorts during the winter and then the altitude difference affects the charge. For example, if you travel 15 miles and the altitude difference is 300 meters, you lose 3-4 miles in range uphill and gain the same distance downhill.
  • Take the opportunity to heat your car with energy from the grid while charging.

What is actually happening in the battery?

  • Increased resistance: The cold increases the internal resistance within the battery cells. As a result, the battery becomes less efficient at delivering and receiving electricity.
  • Difficulties for chemical reactions: Batteries work through chemical reactions and these reactions become slower at low temperatures.
